And yet, advertising seems to take all the fun out of media. I often despair reading any internet page on my phone anymore since at least 50-70% of the screen is ads, hiding or actively blocking the content I want to see. Some media outlets I've seen have backtracked this stance, where subscriptions pay for most of the costs to keep a site running, but they are small scale.

However, I agree with your stance that this is an inevitability for games. For some types of games I could see where ads appear. But can you imagine booting up your $70 game, which you payed for and theoretically own, only to be forced to watch 3-4 adverts before playing, just like in a cinema? Unfortunately I can.

Xbox was never and won’t be mass market problem. The inherent issues of local performance and cross-platform compatibility can never be truly resolved(gaming’s strict latency requirements make cloud streaming unviable), meaning the potential market will always remain a niche. Thus ad play won’t apply here.
